House fires increase as the energy crisis bites

Zurich insurance have issued a safety warning as house fires have increased due to the use of candles. The amount of fires owing to candles has reached a decade high. The rise in this type of fire is thought to be owing to people cutting back on electricity to reduce their energy bills.

In their safety warning, Zurich cite that firefighters in England tackled 940 blazes ignited by candles in the year to March 2022 – the highest annual figure since at least 2010.
