Riot DamageRioting in London and other cities in recent days has resulted in widespread damage to property and interruption to business.

Insurance policies for occupied properties generally will cover damage caused by riot, malicious damage and fire, although insurers have set strict time limits for notification for claims.

All claims for riot damage need to be notified to the Centor Claims Department within 7 Days of the damage occurring.

Cover for properties that are continually unoccupied maybe more restricted so please consult your Centor Account Manager if you have questions.

The reason for the strict time limit imposed by insurers is that the Riot Damages Act 1886 must be notified to the police by the insurers within 14 days of the riot occurring. As long as the claim is made by the insurers within that time limit they are able to recover some of the cost from the Police Authority.

As a result of this short time limit insurers require the claim to be made by the policyholder within 7 days of the riot damage occurring.

The Centor Claims Team is on hand to assist you with any claims you need to make following the riots. To notify a new claim speak to your usual claims contact or call the claims team on 0207 330 8716 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
